A brief look at the Tipo 916 Gtv

Background

The 916 GTV project began when Alfa Romeo identified the need for a new 2+2 sports coupe in the sunset of the outgoing GTV6. Alfa Romeo’s objective was to create a modern sports coupe to represent the best of their technology & to symbolise their philosophy. The design & build requirements were listed as follows:

  • driving pleasure,
  • state of the art technologies,
  • extraordinary engine performance,
  • multilink suspension,
  • comfortable interior that allows driving enjoyment & has strong character.

Styling

Pininfarina was commissioned for the design with Enrico Fumia being tasked with the project. The early concept & his sketches met with Alfa Romeo management approval, taking about a year for these to be translated into three dimensions with the first clay models. Approximately two years after their initial presentations to management, Pininfarina returned with the final design & handed over the full scale model to Alfa Romeo Centro Stile ready for the completion of the detail work. This was undertaken under Chief Designer Walter Maria de’Silva.
The GTV is formed as an aggressive wedge with prominent rising swage lines. The stance is low & wide, with wheels flush with the arches. The ground hugging front swells into a smoothed bonnet featuring a V-motif that grows from a compact, efficient version of the Alfa Romeo shield shaped grille. The clamshell bonnet’s composite construction facilitates fluid lines & low mass. The hard edges of the grooves rising from the front give way to complex curves that swell over the rear wheels & end in a truncated “Kamm” tail. Some versions feature a dramatic aerodynamic wing whose lines are harmonised with the swage on the side, rear deck on the bottom & cut-off tail on the rear.
Among the details are compact paired round headlights echoing previous editions of GTV coupe’s with high efficiency poly-elliptical lamps inset either side of the grille. Door releases are flush fitted items, the door glazing frameless & rear lighting by way of a single, elegant horizontal light strip.
De Silva & his team managed to impart fleshed out curves to the surfaces without compromising Pininfarina’s aggressive line.

Interior

The coupe’s door & frameless window open to reveal a classically sporting interior. The cabin layout is 2+2, providing comfortable, sporting accommodation for two with the possibility, if absolutely necessary, of an additional two. The thick rim steering wheel, gear lever & handbrake are trimmed in leather. So too are the seats & doors, by MOMO. The design features a prominent Italianate round theme with classic individually hooded major instruments & with the centre vertical console’s equipment arranged in three rows of three: vents, auxiliary instruments & climate controls. The colour of the leather upholstery & trim is offset by the satin silver finish of the centre console & primary instrument hoods. The architecture & design combined with the cabin proportions, low ceiling, widescreen view out of the front & seat position create a rare & exotic environment for driver & co-driver. Unlike many coupe’s available, the GTV is clearly not simply a two door version of a sports sedan.
